Life is Elsewhere; Delilah, Chapter 2

I laughed with Finn as we finished painting my room. Well, as I finished painting while he held my stuff so I could reach the ceiling. Now every part of me is on these walls. My favorite quotes here and there, a couple of things to remind me of my old home, and a lot of references to the vlogbrothers. Finn decided to pass up on the offer for me to show him their awesomeness.

After I got off the ladder, he started talking nervously.

“So,” He mumbled, “There’s this party tonight…”

“I’m not really a party person,” I cut in.

“Come on,” Mom calls in from the kitchen/living area where she was pretending to unpack while listening and watching everything we did, “You don’t know anybody, this would be a great chance for you to meet a few people!”

Finn smiles hopefully, his large glittering green eyes having an effect on me, despite being half hidden under hair that never ceased getting in his face.  After a moment of staring at him with an eyebrow raised, he continued talking, hurriedly.

“It wouldn’t be a date,” he mumbled the exact words I wanted to hear, with that dread ‘n’t’ ruining it all, “my friends, Dmitri and Kim are going to come with us.”

“Oh,” I hid my disappointment, “I, uh, guess that sounds great.”

“Well look at that,” Mom was now in the doorway, “my baby girl has a ‘not date’ already! And we’ve only been in town for three days!”

I laughed with Finn as I slowly walked him to the door, “So, what am I supposed to wear?”

“Normal party clothes,” he shrugged, “I’ll pick you up at 9:30.”

After he left the apartment, I closed the door and groaned. I have a half hour to get read, and there was paint all over me.

“Oh, c’mon honey, it’s not a big deal,” Mom laughed, “let me show you what I wore to my first city party.”

I tried to protest, but before I could tell her that times have changed and whatever she had probably wouldn’t do, she showed me it.

My breath stopped as I looked at the dress. The centerpiece was the black corset, with its black stitched on patterns leading down to the skirt. It looked as though it would reach until halfway down my thigh. With it, my mom wanted to pair some gorgeous patterned black tights and killer heels. I said yes to the tights, and no to the heels. Instead I grabbed my trusty old knee-high Converse.

“He’ll have to live with me wearing my favorite shoes. Especially since it’s a ‘not date.’”

Mom caught the slight venomous tint in my voice and hugged me, “Baby girl, he obviously likes you.”

“Then why won’t he tell me?” I zipped up one of the Converse angrily.

“Why won’t you tell him?”

“Because…” I tried to think up a good reason and zipped up the other shoe to give myself more time, “I’m brand new! And what if he has a girlfriend?”

“And he’s inviting you instead of her because…?”

Instead of answering, I checked my phone for the time, “He’s gonna be here soon, Mom. I’ve got to get some stuff together.”

I made sure my ID and a couple of bucks was in my wallet and put it deep in my left shoe, then I put my cell phone in the other. Just as I was making sure it didn’t make too big of a bump, there was a knock on the door.

I answered the door before Mom got the chance. And man, Finn looked great.

“Hey,” Finn smiled, “This is Dmitri, one of my good friends, and his friend Kim.”

Dmitri looked like he would rather be elsewhere, with hands shoved in his pocket and a bored frown on his face. He looked at me and quickly looked away before nodding. Kim was much more friendly, smiling and shaking my hand.

“Hi,” I said, “I’m Delilah.”

“We know,” Kim said with a laugh, “For the last ten minutes, Finn hasn’t shut up about you.”

I caught Finn blushing and smiling sheepishly for a second.

“Come on, the party started half an hour ago.”
