Life is Elsewhere; Delilah, Chapter 3

“So, what do you want to drink?” Finn asked as we squeezed into the kitchen.

“What is there?” I asked, trying to avoid getting a glimpse of…whatever it was they were doing in that corner, or that one, or on that bench.

“Looks like all they have is beer, punch and water,” Finn turned back to me and opened a can of beer for himself, “What’ll it be?”

“Um…just water,” I knew I looked like an innocent little girl, but I wasn’t really offended by the idea of looking that way.

Finn gave me a bottle, and I checked to make sure it wasn’t tampered with. We went through the first floor of the house, he introduced me to a couple of people, but we mostly just chatted together.

After a while, we ended up in the front yard, walking between the passed out drunken teens.

“Is that Dmitri?” I asked, pointing to a guy with his head between his legs, “Is he alright?”

“I think it’s him,” Finn said, “But leave him. He’ll be fine.”

“Are you sure?”

“Don’t worry, he’s probably just got a headache or something. Let’s go find Kim.”

He led me inside, and we quickly found Kim dancing. When she saw us, she stopped and came over.

“Hey!” she smiled widely and talked over the loud music, “How’s your night so far?”

Finn gave her a thumbs up and I nodded in agreement.

“Do you know where Dmitri is?”

“Yeah,” Kim nodded, “He was getting some air out front.”

“I’ll go back and try to find him,” Finn offered, “Then we can figure out what to do next.”

“Sure,” Kim answered as Finn turned away.

Once he was out of the room, she pulled me away from the dance floor towards a couch. As we sat and waited for Finn and Dmitri to come back, Kim looked at me expectantly. I kept glancing at her as she looked at me, wondering what it was that she wanted. I couldn’t figure out what she was staring at me for until she started talking.

“So…” She said, “Liking the party?”

“Not really my style, if I’m honest.”

She laughed, “Then why would you agree to come?”

I couldn’t tell her the truth; that I came because my mom thought it would be good for me, so I just shrugged.

“C’mon,” she begged, “You can tell me!”

“I just came because I figured that it couldn’t hurt.”

She nodded. A few moments later, when Finn and Dmitri still hadn’t returned, she started another conversation.

“So what do you think of Finn?”

“He’s nice,” I said, “He’s the only person I’ve spent a lot of time with since I got here, other than my mom.”

“Cool,” she laughed, “but I was more so asking whether or not you’d date him.”

I could feel my cheeks go bright pink and I stuttered as I answered, “Um, maybe…I mean, I, um…haven’t really…um…”

“So,” Finn said behind me. I jumped from surprise and turned towards him, “Dmitri’s getting a headache. Maybe we should head somewhere quieter?”

“Sounds like a plan!” Kim said.

As she quickly stood up, her hair bounced slightly. I walked quickly next to Kim and whispered hastily in her ear.

“How much did he hear?”

“He might have heard you say ‘um,’” She laughed, “Don’t worry. You’re fine. Except your cheeks are pink.”

I shook my head at her and glanced at Finn. He hadn’t noticed that I was blushing, he seemed to be too deep in thought to even notice is someone went streaking and ran right in front of him.

“Wow…you really are innocent!” Kim laughed. Before I could ask her what she meant, Dmitri showed up in front of us.

“So what’s the plan?” he asked.

“Go somewhere quieter,” Finn answered, “McDonalds sound good?”

“Sure, let’s go,” Kim answered, and we were off.
