Life is Elsewhere; Delilah, Chapter 4

After touching Finn, I felt myself blushing brightly. I had to get out of there before I started stuttering, which would make me cry of embarrassment and then I’d be even more freaked out and it would just snowball out of control. I hurriedly made my way to the bathroom after excusing myself.

While I was in there, I stared at the mirror and turned on the faucet. I splashed the water on my face to try to cool myself off wiped it off. That’s when I felt my shoe vibrate. I tried to get the phone out, but the person who had called had hung up.

I didn’t have a chance to check who called, because as soon as I pulled out the phone, I got a call from Kurt.

“What do you want?” I answered. I didn’t need to deal with my ex right now.

“I miss you,” he whined.

“Kurt! I’ve been gone three months and moved twice. If you missed me, you would have called me before now.”

“I was busy! I had finals to study for,” he explained.

“It’s been a month and a half since the school year ended,” I said, “What—or should I say who were you busy with for the rest of that time?”

He didn’t answer.

“Don’t try to act like you miss me,” I started, “Kurt.”

“But I do miss you!”

“We were dating for like, 2 weeks, and half of that time, you spent cheating on me.”

He didn’t answer, again. I waited two seconds for his next excuse before continuing.

“That’s what I thought. Go miss some other girl. I’m done,” I practically growled.

After hanging up, I leaned against the wall and tried to calm down. It’s just Kurt. He’s gone, you’re done with him. Go out there and see Finn.

Before I could go out though, my phone started ringing again. I ignored the call and went back out to the group. They were talking in hushed tones as I approached them.

“Hey Delilah!” Finn said in the middle of another sentence.

“Hey,” I said in a questioning tone, “Sorry I was gone so long. I got a call.”

Finn rushed to answer before anyone else could say anything, “Oh it’s no problem. Right guys? No problem at all.”

I saw Kim’s smirk aimed at Dmitri as I sat down. I bit my lip, and wondered what could have happened. Then Finn let out a quiet cry. When I looked at him, he was glaring at Kim and Kim was smiling back. Then he turned toward me.

“So, Delilah, I was wondering…” he bit his lip in the cutest way. Kim kicked him when he didn’t continue after a second. He then said something so quickly that I almost didn’t catch it. “Will you go out with me?”

After the initial shock, I nodded.

“Yes!” Finn fist pumped.

“I told you!” Kim said loudly while pointing at Finn. This caused the only other people in the restaurant, the ones behind the counter, to stare at us.

We started laughing and ate our food as quickly as we could.

This time, when Finn touched my arm, I didn’t rush to the bathroom to hide. Not even an entire minute later, my phone rang again. I cursed and explained that my ex boyfriend had already called me three times. Dmitri coughed and called him a stalker.

“Can I answer it?” Finn asked with slightly big eyes. I nodded. He picked up the phone and pressed ‘talk.’ “Yo...Yeah, this is Delilah’s phone…I’m Finn, her new boyfriend,” Finn held the phone away from his head and laughed. We could all hear the yelling on the other side, I took the phone from him.

“Kurt,” I said.

“You’re dating someone?! Now I look like a fool because of you!” He started.

“Yes, I am. Why didn’t you tell me that you were dating someone else?”

“I’m not, you little…” I cut him off.

“You were, a week after we started dating.”

Finn took my phone, “I could call you all sorts of names, jackass, for cheating on Delilah…No, I’ve never done it, and I never will!...How about this, you stop calling Delilah and she won’t get a restraining order against you.”

He hung up before Kurt could answer.

Kim and Dmitri high fived him. After that, we talked for a while longer and finished the fries. When we were out the door, we stopped for a second, realizing we had no plans of what to do next.

“I have work tomorrow,” Dmitri said, “I need to go.”

“And I don’t feel like being a third wheel,” Kim said, “So I’ll go with him. You two have an enjoyable date.”

They went in one direction, Finn and I started walking in the opposite direction. For a while, we were comfortably silent.

“I can’t believe you said yes,” He said in wonder.

“Why wouldn’t I?”

“Most girls around here that are like you don’t like me.”

I took offense to that immediately, “Why wouldn’t they?! Do they think they’re better than you? They better not…that’s just stupid. It’s not like there’s even…”

“No,” Finn said with a laugh.

“No…what?”

“No, they don’t think that they’re better than me.”

“Then why wouldn’t they want to date you?!” I was completely flabbergasted.

“Most girls like you, the artsy, sweet, non-slutty, ones…well, they think I’m a cheater. Among other things.”

“Why would they think that?!"

“They don’t get to know me. One girl, she was completely psycho, she said we were dating. She went to my girlfriend at the time and told her that I was a cheater.”

“Who was that girl?”

“Which one? Girlfriend or Psycho?”

“Psycho.”

“You didn’t meet her tonight. I doubt that you ever will. Her family moved.”

I nodded, “How about old girlfriend?”

“She didn’t believe me. I gave up on her after a few days. If she could believe a psycho over me, we obviously didn't belong together. You might meet her, but let’s hope not.”

I nodded again. The topic turned to brighter subjects for the rest of the walk, until we almost passed our building and realized that it was almost 1 AM. He took me to my apartment, hugged me, and kissed my forehead.

“Sleep well,” he said.

“You too.”
