“So what did you think of all that?” Kim twisted around in the swing to face me. We ended up wandering into a local playground after leaving McDonald’s.
I shook my head, “Just like Finn. Once he got over his initial embarrassment, of course.”
“Yeah,” she sighed. “It was kind of sweet, the way he talked to her ex.”
“A little overboard.”
“That’s what makes it sweet, D.” She twisted her swing back around, her hair flying back. “Push me.”
“You have legs, don’t you?”
“But it’s so much more fun not doing work.”
In silence, I gave her swing a soft push. As she went higher and higher, she faced her face up to the sky. “The street lamps block all the stars,” she scowled.
I looked up with her. Black space met my eyes, made slightly lighter by the shine of the moon and the street lamps. “Then we’ll just have to find a place where the stars shine through.”
“Like a place like that exists in the city.”
“You never know.” I moved into the swing next to her and grabbed the chain of her swing. She slowed to a stop.
Kim turned and looked at me, “Do you know a place like that?”
“I’m still searching.”
“Lemme know when you find it, ‘kay?”
“I will.”
Time passed. At the time, I didn’t know how much. We sat there, talking about whatever came to mind. We looked up to the sky, straining to see past the artificial light and find the stars that hid behind. And it was better than any party. And all too soon, it had to end.
“I need to get back,” Kim announced. We stood up, both a little hesitant, but ready to move forward.
“Ready?” I put my hands in my pocket.
Kim looped her arm through mine and moved in close, “Ready.”
